​​​​​​​DVSA updating the Individual Vehicle Approval inspection manual for light goods vehicles (N1)

From 14 July 2025, some changes will take effect in the IVA inspection manual for light goods vehicles (N1) submitted for Individual Vehicle Approval. 

What are the changes?

Changes have been made to the following sections:

•          Foreword 

•          Steering Effort (section 05)

•          Brake systems (section 09A)

•          Speedometer and reverse gear (section 17)

•          Seat belt anchorages (section 19)

•          Installation of lights (section  20)

•          End-outline, position (side), stop, side marker & daytime running lamps (section 22)

•          Seat belts (section 31)

•          Forward vision (section 32)

•          Braking (section N09)

•          Glossary of terms

These changes are explained in the ’release notes’ at the beginning of the manual and in the ‘Record of revision’ page for each section.

Some of the key changes:

•          Requirements for vehicles fitted with 'Steer-by-wire' and 'Brake-by-wire' systems added.

•          Speedometer requirements revised at Section 17, Speedometer and Reverse Gear, including acceptable evidence where a speedometer is determined to be functioning incorrectly.

•          Clarification of seat direction added to Section 19, Seat Belt Anchorages.

•          Assessment of lamps in the form of a 'band or strip' added to Section 22, End-outline, Position (Side), Stop, Side Marker & Daytime Running Lamps.

•          Revision of belt type permitted on side facing seats at Section 31, Seat Belts.
