DfT Bus and Coach Security Guidance Updated

8 Dec 2025

DfT guidance to strengthen counter-terrorism security, reassure passengers, and increase public confidence in using bus and coach services and facilities is updated, benefiting to help to reduce the risk of crime and antisocial behaviour.

The focus of this guidance is to safeguard the bus and coach sector, along with its assets, personnel, and the traveling public, from the threat of terrorism.

Although acts of terrorism in the UK are infrequent, when they do happen, they can cause significant harm to both individuals and the economy. While the primary emphasis is on providing counter-terrorism advice and guidelines, we recognize that other security concerns can also greatly impact the sector; therefore, this guidance will address those areas as well.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has collaborated with the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO) and the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) to ensure that valuable resources on best security practices and increasing staff awareness of counter-terrorism are accessible to the bus and coach sector.

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act, known as Martyn’s Law, is currently in the implementation phase as of April 2025. Once the Home Office issues the statutory guidance, we will update the bus and coach security guidance to provide you with the necessary information to comply with the law.
