Liverpool Coroner seeks clarification from Secretary of State for Transport regarding seatbelt use on coaches

6 Oct 2023

BBC North West are reporting that following last week's tragic accident involving a coach carrying school children on the M53 in Merseyside, the Liverpool Coroner has written to the Secretary of State for Transport to seek clarification on the wearing of seatbelts on coaches.

For clarification, below you will find current rules that operators are required to following regarding passenger use of seatbelts.

•            Drivers, the courier or group leader is required to announce the requirement to fasten safety belts to passengers BEFORE the vehicle moves off

•            All passengers over 14 years of age must wear a seatbelt and it is their responsibility to make sure it is fastened

•            Signage must be displayed at each seat reminding passengers of this responsibility
