Next-gen eCall warning issued by DfT

7 Aug 2026

The Department for Transport (DfT) has issued guidance on next generation emergency call (eCall) on new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

The system is designed to automatically summon assistance in the event of a serious collision by notifying the emergency services.  However, DfT says that next generation eCall “may not operate and should not be relied upon in an emergency”.  “Emergency services should be contacted by a mobile phone or a roadside SOS phone,” it added.
