Transport trade associations have warned against cutting government capital spending to fund extra defence spending.
Reports suggest ministers have been asked to cut departmental budgets for a £15 billion defence boost, with the Department for Transport facing some of the deepest reductions.
Industry groups argue that cutting transport investment would weaken a sector vital to supply chains, households, businesses and the wider economy. They call for greater investment in local and national roads alongside defence spending.
They urge a balanced approach that recognises infrastructure’s strategic role in conflict. The same transport networks supporting businesses, communities and public services are also essential for defence production and future mobilisation.
