Scottish Government to Raise HGV Speed Limits

22 Dec 2025

Transport Scotland has confirmed that it will implement new speed limits for HGVs on its roads following the National Speed Management Review, writes Peter Brown.

It means HGV speed limits will go from 40 to 50mph on single carriageways and 50 to 60mph on dual carriageways, matching both England and Wales.

Cabinet secretary for transport Fiona Hyslop said: “We are going to start work now on the steps needed to increase HGV speed limits, recognising the consultation feedback and the positive results of similar changes from the A9 HGV speed limit trial and other parts of the UK.

More than 19,500 responses to the National Speed Management Review public consultation were received.
