Tachograph rule change for vans reminder

30 Jun 2026

New tachograph rules for light goods vehicles (LGVs) will come into force from Wednesday July 1.

Under rules introduced as part of EU mobility package, vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) over 2.5 tonnes driving into Europe will need to be fitted with second-generation smart tachographs

The change brings affected vehicles into scope of EU drivers’ hours rules for the first time, requiring compliance with limits on driving time and mandatory rest periods.

The rules do not affect LCVs if they are just driven within the UK.

Failure to comply could result in enforcement action, including fines, vehicle immobilisation, or restrictions on cross-border operations.

The technology brings several enforcement and operational improvements, including automatic border recording, loading and unloading logs, and remote roadside checks.

DVSA has previously reported lead times of four to six weeks for installations.
