Updated Guidance for International HGV Drivers and Passengers

9 Aug 2024

The Department for Transport (DfT), DVSA, DVLA, and Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain have updated the documentation requirements for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) crossing international borders.

Key Documents for HGVs and Trailers

Drivers and operators must carry:

  • Vehicle Insurance and Green Cards: Now required for Montenegro, but no longer needed for Belarus, Iran, and Russia.
  • Goods Vehicle Operator Licence Discs: Displayed to certify the vehicle for carrying goods.
  • Vehicle Emission Levels and Controls: To comply with environmental regulations.
  • Haulage Licences or Permits: Necessary for legal goods transport.

Essential Driver Documentation

Drivers must have:

  • UK Driving Licence: With the correct category for the vehicle.
  • Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC): Required for professional lorry drivers in the UK, EU, and certain other countries.

Additional documents include:

  • Vehicle and Trailer Insurance and Green Cards
  • Drivers’ Hours Documents and Tachographs
  • Covid-19 Testing and Visas

Adhering to these updated requirements is vital for the smooth operation of HGVs across international borders. By ensuring all necessary documentation is in order, drivers and operators can avoid legal issues and ensure a seamless journey.
