RHA has repeated calls for a professional driver exemption from the Schengen-area 90/180-day rule as nine EU countries have moved to delay the in-full introduction of Entry-Exit System (EES) checks.
EES, the new digital border management system for non-EU citizens entering or leaving the Schengen area, is set to lead to more stringent enforcement of the rule that prevents visitors spending more than 90 days out within a 180-day period in the region.
Since its phased-in introduction began in October 2025, technical issues have led to delays all over Europe and the required biometric checks have been suspended at peak periods.
Full rollout was due to have started on 6 September, but the EU has allowed nine countries, including France, to delay the process. Greece, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Malta, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Belgium are also pausing the complete rollout.
