Minor updates to DVLA Driver Medical Guidance

21 Sep 2024

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has updated it’s published guidance in relation to drivers’ medical conditions. The guidance provides the baseline standards for many medical conditions and is used by medical professionals when considering a driver’s fitness to drive. Standards differ between Group 1 (car and motorcycle) and Group 2 (PSV / LGV vocational), the latter requiring higher standards be met. The guidance can be extremely useful to members when faced with assisting a driver who is subject to a condition that may affect their ability to hold a licence.

The latest update includes changes to the section regarding alcohol dependence and misuse, and the definition of controlled drinking. The abstinence period for drivers has been reduced from ‘ongoing’ to set periods with DVLA monitoring. There is also a change in relation to epilepsy, with clarification of the action a Group 2 driver should take when stopping anti-seizure medication now included.
