Electric trucks tested in Project JOLT real world trial

26 Nov 2025

An independent research initiative is evaluating electric trucks from Mercedes, Scania, DAF, and Volvo in real-world operations with major fleet providers to assess the total cost of ownership for informed fleet transition decisions.

The independently funded Project JOLT has deployed four electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) in active service, collecting data on range and battery performance for analysis by the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight. As part of the project, each participating company will operate two eHGVs for three months in two separate trial periods. The vehicles supplied by the original equipment manufacturers include the Mercedes eActros 600, Scania G230E, DAF XD FT 350e, and Volvo FH42TE.

John Lewis and Jacksons Bakery, which is a part of the William Jackson Food Group (WJFG), are both currently testing the feasibility of replacing their diesel fleet vehicles with electric alternatives, given their relatively light load requirements.

This phase of the trial will continue until the end of the year, after which the vehicles will be assigned to two additional national operators for further evaluation during the subsequent quarter.
