Incorporating international rules into GB type approval for road vehicles

11 Jun 2025

Having considered the responses to this consultation, DfT will continue to update GB type approval for road vehicles. We will introduce the following measures through a statutory instrument:

updating the standards for emergency call systems

mandating compliance with the requirements of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) regulation 157 on automated lane keeping systems (ALKS)

updating the UNECE regulations acceptable for demonstrating compliance with requirements for the fitment of ISOFIX

enabling manufacturers to calculate a vehicle’s fuel and carbon dioxide emissions

amending the test procedures for assessing the performance of windscreen defrost/demist and wash/wipe systems

The original consultation was about updating the GB type approval regime to reflect developments in vehicle safety regulations in the European Union and internationally through the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).   To provide support to the automotive industry by streamlining vehicle approvals processes and avoid the need for unique GB designs or duplicate testing for those selling into both the UK and EU.
