Level Crossings Keep Drivers Safe – Be Aware – tool box opportunity

11 Dec 2025

As the festive season approaches, delivery drivers face increased pressure to meet deadlines

and keep up with the surge in parcels. However, for employers, safety on the road must always remain the top priority, especially when it comes to navigating level crossings.

‘At level crossings, a Train doesn’t care if you’re late with your delivery’

Every level crossing is unique, take time to read the information on this page to find out how to stay safe when using them

There are various types of level crossings, ranging from simple footpath crossings to more complex public road crossings with lights, barriers and alarms. There are also different types of users, including road vehicle drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders who use them every day. Level crossing users must always follow the rules below to stay safe.

At crossings on public roads

  1. Stop if level crossing warnings are activated. Never cross if barriers are lowering or already down
  2. Make sure your exit is clear before going onto the crossing.
  3. Cross quickly and carefully, never stop on a level crossing.
  4. If the crossing is activated, always wait for barriers to raise and lights to extinguish before crossing.

Unfortunately, there are numerous safety events every single year involving trains and level crossing users.

Network Rail is committed to safety and that is why they want to make sure that your drivers are using level crossings safely.
