DVSA advise that as of 5 January 2026, all DVSA assessors at all ATF sites will have been issued a new DVSA-approved tool to test PSV door safety systems.
The tool allows examiners to safely and consistently test the door resistance, keeping examiner's hands clear of closing doors, while maintaining the integrity of the test.
What this means for ATFs and PSV operators
This update does not change what your vehicle must do to pass. Door safety systems must still stop, or stop and re-open, when resistance is applied. The standard remains the same - only the method used by assessors is changing.
Why the Introduction
The new tool was introduced following feedback from assessors and trade unions and was preferred by 87% of assessors in nationwide trials. It ensures a safer and more consistent approach at all test sites. The introduction of the tool reflects DVSA’s commitment to protecting staff and delivering consistent national testing.
What You Need to Do
Please brief your teams so they understand why assessors will now use this tool during PSV annual tests and are prepared for the change by January 2026.
