Threat of rural bus service cuts in Scotland to fund zero-emission vehicles

13 Nov 2025

Concerns have been expressed by transport officials regarding the potential reduction of rural bus services to accommodate the costs of adopting environmentally friendly vehicles. Ranald Robertson, Director of the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership, stated: “Eliminating services in rural communities cannot be justified solely by the transition to zero-emission buses.” He made these remarks at last week’s Confederation of Passenger Transport Scotland conference, where it was noted that 25 percent of the nation’s bus fleet now comprises zero-emission vehicles, including electric and hydrogen-powered buses.
