UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) enforcement to commence

16 Dec 2025

Effective 25 February 2026, enforcement of the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement will be strengthened. This policy will impact operators transporting passengers from the EU, USA, Australia, Canada, and certain other countries into the UK for tourism, family visits, or select purposes with stays up to six months.

Applications for ETA can be made via:

  • Official ETA application page
  • Direct application link
  • Digital support is available via the ETA webchat and web form

An ETA costs £16, though third-party sites may charge more.

The UK Government advises applying at least three working days before travel, but most applications process quickly.

For example, Australian visitors on a European tour returning to the UK must comply with this rule. UK residents and those already needing a visa are exempt.

Eligible travellers must have valid authorisation to enter the UK. All non-British and non-Irish travellers need a digitally linked ETA, eVisa, an approved physical proof, or a designated exemption.
