Charge point enforcement concerns raised

14 May 2026

Fleet managers are being warned that limited visibility over enforcement of the UK’s public charging regulations could create uncertainty around EV charging reliability, as questions continue over how operator performance is being monitored.

The Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed that charge point operators (CPOs) are responsible for self-reporting compliance with the Public Charge Point Regulations, while enforcement sits with the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).

Under the regulations, public rapid and ultra-rapid charging infrastructure of 50kW and above must achieve 99% uptime, with fines of up to £10,000 per charge point available for non-compliance.

However, the DfT said it has no plans to publish a report detailing how operators are performing against the 99% target.
