The death of a lorry driver on the M8 after his vehicle toppled over due to an insecure load has revealed widespread ignorance among truckers and hauliers about loading responsibilities, an inquiry found.
Experienced HGV driver James Murray died in August 2022 after attempting to negotiate a roundabout onto the motorway when his load of 41 pallets of paper and plastic shifted, causing the curtain sider to overturn.
Murray, who drove for West Lothian operator Drummond Distribution, was unconscious when found and later went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene.
His employer was prosecuted and fined £120,000 after pleading guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act.
It has since fully reviewed its health and safety procedures since the fatal accident.
An investigation into his death heard from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which said it was a common misconception in the industry that the driver was the only responsible party for a load.
