New Law Against Public Sexual Harassment

13 Apr 2026

A new legislation has been introduced in the United Kingdom, making public sexual harassment a distinct criminal offence. This includes behaviours such as catcalling, following individuals, or making misogynistic comments. Those found guilty of such actions could face prison sentences of up to two years.

The law builds upon existing public order statutes and is specifically designed to provide improved protection for women and girls. According to police statements, the new provisions enhance their capacity to identify and prosecute offenders, and will help tackle harassment both on public transport and in other public areas.
