Transport for London (TfL) is trialling a new generation of radar-based speed cameras at up to 10 sites across the capital to strengthen enforcement and improve road safety. The trial reflects ongoing efforts to address speeding, which is a contributing factor in around half of fatal collisions in London.
The cameras, developed in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service, will be installed over the coming weeks in locations including Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Croydon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Brent, Hackney, Ealing and Sutton. All sites are on 20mph or 30mph roads and have been selected based on risk and suitability.
Existing spot speed cameras typically monitor up to three lanes and rely on in-road sensors.
TfL said improved image quality will support the police in identifying offenders and progressing enforcement action more efficiently. As with existing systems, signage will be checked and cameras calibrated before enforcement begins.
Part of Vision Zero Action Plan
The trial forms part of TfL’s wider Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads.
This includes expanding the capital’s safety camera network and introducing new technology to improve enforcement capability.
Part of the plans include proposals to charge large SUVs to drive in the capital.
