New tachograph Regulations for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) from July 2026.

31 Mar 2026

Under rules introduced as part of EU mobility package, vans and LCVs over 2.5 tonnes driving into Europe will need to be fitted with second-generation smart tachographs, representing a major regulatory change for many operators who have never previously had to manage drivers’ hours compliance.

The change brings affected vehicles into scope of EU drivers’ hours rules for the first time, requiring compliance with limits on driving time and mandatory rest periods.

The rules do not affect LCVs if they are just driven within the UK.

New compliance burden for LCV fleets

UK fleet operators that are impacted will also need to capture, store and present tachograph data during inspections, including driver card data and up to 56 days of records.

Failure to comply could result in enforcement action and financial penalties.

Focus on systems and processes

Operators should ensure they have systems in place to monitor driver activity, manage data downloads and identify potential infringements early.  Automated analysis tools, remote data downloads and real time alerts can help reduce administrative burden while supporting compliance.
