Transport for London spend on ‘insulting’ initiatives to tackle fatigue criticised by UNITE

26 Jun 2026

Unite has criticised Transport for London’s approach to tackling bus driver fatigue, arguing that a £500,000 programme of wellbeing initiatives has failed to address underlying causes. The union said measures such as wellbeing resources, fatigue awareness training and depot sleep pods place responsibility on drivers rather than employers. Citing a recent survey, Unite claimed a third of bus drivers believe fatigue has worsened since 2019. The union is calling for changes to scheduling, minimum rest periods, improved welfare facilities and a formal fatigue management framework across London’s bus network.
